    What is CBD Oil?

    Date: 05-25-2022

What exactly is CBD oil? We have been hearing about CBD all over the place lately. People are taking it for pain relief, anxiety, depression, daily wellness, and more. But, what is it and how does it work? How do you take it? You can learn all about CBD in our blog post: What is CBD?. But in this article, we will learn about CBD oil, where it comes from, why people use it, and where to find it. Let’s dive in.

Where does CBD oil come from?

In an article from Healthline, CBD oil is described as a product that is derived from cannabis. CBD is a type of cannabinoid or chemical found in the marijuana plant. CBD, or cannabidiol, doesn’t create a head high, like THC. CBD is extracted from marijuana plants as either an oil or a powder. CBD oil is a liquid extracted from cannabis and hemp, containing CBD as the primary component. The plant is harvested and placed into a container, which is run through solvents that remove the plant's waxes and chlorophyll. The liquid then goes through a process of evaporation, leaving the CBD-rich concentrates in an oil form.

Industrial hemp and cannabis contain cannabinoids that are not psychoactive. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is naturally occurring in hemp and cannabis. Unlike THC, which causes a high, hemp-derived CBD contains less than 0.3% THC and is completely legal to grow, harvest, and process into finished products. CBD oil is not psychoactive, which makes it a perfect option for medicinal use.

CBD oil is extracted from the marijuana plant, but there are varying types of CBD oil that can be found and extracted. One type of CBD oil is CBD isolate, which is pure CBD. Pure CBD can provide great benefits, and does not have any THC content. Broad-spectrum CBD has other cannabinoids and plant chemicals and may provide more therapeutic relief than pure CBD. Full-spectrum CBD has more cannabinoids and plant chemicals than both broad-spectrum and pure CBD, and it also contains trace amounts of THC. Though there are small, trace amounts of CBD found in full-spectrum products, there is not enough THC to produce any type of high. Many people choose to use full-spectrum products because of the additional therapeutic benefits associated with them. Both broad spectrum and full spectrum products combine THC with other cannabinoids to produce the “entourage effect”, which is believed to provide more therapeutic relief than just CBD alone.

What are people taking CBD oil for?

What therapeutic benefits does CBD oil provide, you ask? CBD has been trending for its ability to provide relief from many different ailments, its use in self-care, and its popularity for daily wellness.

    1. Anxiety and Depression Relief

CBD oil has been used by many to offset the symptoms of anxiety and depression. CBD has calming properties, and a study revealed that it has effects similar to the antidepressant imipramine. Another study showed that participants who received CBD experienced significantly reduced anxiety compared to those who didn’t. In an article by Healthline, it is stated that researchers think CBD may change the way your brain’s receptors respond to serotonin. Other studies have shown that CBD may help relieve anxiety by reducing stress, decreasing physiological effects of anxiety, improving symptoms of PTSD, and helping improve sleep.

    1. Anti-seizure and Anti-Epileptic Properties

CBD oil has also been used to effectively treat seizures and epilepsy, as well as other neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. In one study, participants given CBD had 36.5% fewer seizures per month. CBD oil might reduce the inflammation that makes neurodegenerative symptoms worse, though more research is needed to completely understand how CBD may help.

    1. Pain Relief

CBD is also used by many people to help relieve pain. Those suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and other types of pain, may find relief from CBD. In an article by Forbes Health which talked about a 2020 study, patients were given CBD topically and results showed a significant reduction in intense, sharp pains and cold, itchy sensations in those with symptomatic peripheral neuropathy. In another article by Healthline, it is mentioned that the effects of CBD oil on your brain’s receptors may also help manage pain.

    1. Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties

CBD has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in several inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. It can also be helpful for inflammatory skin conditions, and in some studies have shown to demonstrate anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, anti-aging, and anticancer properties, according to Medical News Today.

CBD also possesses antioxidant properties. In an article by PubMed, it is stated that CBD interrupts free radical chain reactions and captures free radicals or transforms them into less active forms. “CBD reduces oxidative conditions by preventing the formation of superoxide radicals,” says the article.

    1. Self-Care

As CBD has demonstrated so many amazing benefits and relief from many different conditions, it has become quite useful in self-care. Not only can it provide relief from many different ailments, but it can also produce calming properties. Self-care is the practice of taking action to improve your own health, especially during periods of stress. With CBD helping with stress and anxiety, it is the perfect tool for self-care and daily wellness. Some people take CBD for daily wellness, while it is available to take an extra dose for your self-care routine. CBD oil is a great option, but many people enjoy CBD edibles or other forms of CBD for self-care.

Where can I find CBD oil?

CBD oil can be used in many different ways, such as sublingually, topically, orally through a capsule, and even added to food and beverages as CBD edibles. It can be found in so many different places now that it is trending and on the rise. It is available at the gas station or smoke shop down the street, at your local health store, and even online.
